A British naturalist named Brian Houghton Hodgson first described the steppe eagle in 1833. The scientific name, Aquila nipalensis, comes from Latin and a specific location. Aquila means eagle, and nipalensis means "from Nepal." This name was likely chosen because birds were found there while migrating.
