This eagle is a very skilled hunter. It is an apex predator, which means it is at the top of its food chain. For a long time, people called it the monkey-eating eagle. They thought it only ate monkeys because of early reports. We now know it eats many different things. It eats large snakes, monitor lizards, and even large birds like hornbills. In some areas, flying lemurs make up 90% of its diet.

It can even hunt animals as small as a bat or as large as a Philippine deer.

Scientists first studied this bird in 1896. An English naturalist named John Whitehead observed it. His servant, Juan, collected the very first specimen. The bird was sent to London to be described. Because of the early reports about monkeys, it was given a scientific name that means "monkey-eater." However, the name was changed in 1978. President Ferdinand Marcos officially called it the Philippine eagle. In 1995, President Fidel V. Ramos named it a national emblem.

Most of the eagles live on Mindanao Island. They love living in thick forests, especially in steep areas. They can live in lowlands or high up in mountains. Sadly, the eagles face a very hard job for survival. They are critically endangered because much of their forest home is being lost. This loss of habitat is their biggest threat.

Learning about the eagle helps us understand how nature works. Each breeding pair needs a huge amount of space to live and raise chicks. If the forest is cut down, the eagles have nowhere to go. We can see their importance in daily life too. The eagle is even pictured on the Philippine one thousand-peso note. Protecting the forests helps keep these magnificent birds in the sky.
