A man named Carl Linnaeus named it. He originally called it Falco chrysaetos. Later, Mathurin Jacques Brisson moved it to the genus Aquila in 1760. The word Aquila is Latin for eagle. The name chrysaetos comes from Ancient Greek words for gold and eagle. For a long time, people have used these eagles for falconry. Some ancient cultures even held them in high respect.

There are six different types of golden eagles.
