Eagle

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Eagles are large and powerful birds of prey. They are often called apex predators. This means they sit at the top of the food chain. Most eagles live in Eurasia and Africa. Only 14 species live outside these areas. You can find two in North America. Nine live in Central and South America. Three live in Australia.

These birds are very important in their homes. They help keep nature in balance by hunting.

Eagles have amazing bodies built for hunting. They have heavy heads and large, hooked beaks. These beaks help them rip meat from their prey. Their legs are strong and muscular too. They use sharp talons to grab food.

An eagle's eyes are also very special. A wedge-tailed eagle has eyesight twice as good as a human. This is because they have very large pupils. These pupils help light enter their eyes easily. This lets them spot small animals from far away.

People have known about eagles for a very long time. The English word eagle comes from the Old French word "aigle." This word originally came from the Latin word "aquila." In the past, people used the word "ern" to talk about eagles. Some people still use "erne" today for fish eagles.

Scientists study these birds to learn how they live. They group eagles into different families based on their traits. This helps us understand how they are related.

Eagles come in many different sizes. The smallest is the Great Nicobar serpent eagle. It weighs only 450 grams and is 40 centimeters long.

Some eagles are much bigger and stronger. A bald eagle once flew with a 6.8 kg deer fawn. Other eagles can kill animals much heavier than themselves. For example, a martial eagle once killed a 37 kg duiker. That animal was seven or eight times heavier than the bird!

Eagles live in many different kinds of places. Some live in hot deserts or thick tropical forests. Others live in cold areas called tundra.

They build nests called eyries in tall trees or on high cliffs. Some eagles, like fish eagles, hunt in the water. Other eagles, like snake eagles, hunt reptiles in the tropics. Even though they live in different homes, they all use their strength to hunt. They are truly amazing masters of the sky.
