life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The gyrfalcon is a truly amazing bird of prey. It is the largest species in the falcon family. These birds love living in very cold places. You can find them on Arctic coasts and tundra. They also live on islands in northern North America and Siberia.

Because they live in such wide areas, they sometimes travel very long distances. They are very important parts of the cold lands where they live.

This bird has a very interesting way of hunting. Most falcons dive from high up to catch prey. However, the gyrfalcon usually hunts by flying in a straight, horizontal path. It chases its food through the air.

Once it catches something, it often kills the prey on the ground. Their diet includes many different living things. They eat birds like ptarmigan, geese, and even ducks. They also hunt small mammals and sometimes fish.

People have known about these birds for a very long time. A Swedish naturalist named Carl Linnaeus first described them in 1758. He gave them the scientific name Falco rusticolus.

For many centuries, people have valued them as hunting birds. In some languages, their names come from how they fly or how they look. The name "gyrfalcon" might even come from words meaning "circle." This is because they circle in the air while searching for food.

There are many facts to learn about their bodies. The females are much larger and heavier than the males.

A male might weigh about 1.1 kilograms, but a female can be much bigger. Their colors also change a lot, which we call morphs. Some are all white, while others are silver, brown, or black.

In Greenland, the white birds are very common. In other places, like Eurasia, the birds are much darker.

Understanding these birds helps us see how life works in the cold. Their colors help them hide in different lands. This is a way to stay safe and find food.

For example, white birds fit well in snowy places. Even though they look different, they are all part of one big family. They show us how living things adapt to the world around them. Watching them fly reminds us how powerful nature can be.
