The osprey is a large bird of prey that lives near water.

It is known by many names, like sea hawk or fish hawk. These birds are found on almost every continent except Antarctica. They live in many places, from tropical areas to temperate lands. Because they live in so many places, they are very successful. They are the second most widely distributed raptor in the world.

Hunting for food is a very special way of life for an osprey. They are piscivorous, which means they eat almost only fish. Fish make up 99% of what they eat. To find a meal, the bird watches from the air. It sees a fish and hovers for a moment. Then, it dives feet first into the water. Sometimes, the bird even goes completely under the surface.

The osprey has many tools to help it catch slippery prey. Its outer toe is reversible. This means it can move to the back. This lets the bird grab fish with two toes in front and two behind. The underside of its toes has sharp scales called spicules. These help it hold on tight. They also have nostrils that can close to keep water out during a dive.

Scientists have studied these birds for a very long time. A naturalist named Carl Linnaeus described the osprey in 1758. He first called it Falco haliaetus. Later, a zoologist named Marie Jules César Savigny named its genus, Pandion, in 1809. There are four main subspecies of osprey. The American osprey is larger and darker than the Eurasian osprey. The Australasian osprey is the smallest of them all.

Ospreys build very large nests to raise their young. They use sticks, seaweed, and driftwood to make them. These nests can be as wide as 2 meters. Some nests are built on rocks or even utility poles. These nests can become so heavy that they weigh a lot. A nest on a pole can even cause a power outage. Most ospreys start breeding when they are three or four years old.
