For example, the American peregrine (*F. p. anatum*) is found in the Rocky Mountains. The Mediterranean peregrine (*F. p. caucasicus*) is non-migratory and lives near the Caucasus. In the Sunda Islands, the subspecies *ernesti* has very dark, dense barring on its underside. In the past, some groups like the Barbary falcon were considered separate species. However, they are only 0.6% to 0.8% genetically different. This suggests they diverged recently during the Last Ice Age.

In recent history, the peregrine falcon faced a serious threat from human activity. The widespread use of pesticides, especially DDT, caused populations to become endangered in many areas. This chemical caused significant harm to the species. Fortunately, the ban on DDT starting in the early 1970s allowed for a recovery. Populations have grown again thanks to large-scale protection of nesting sites. Humans have also helped by releasing captive-bred birds into the wild. Today, the peregrine is a successful example of urban wildlife. They have adapted to living near humans by using tall buildings as nest sites.
