It sits in the Pyrenees mountains. This valley is part of a big national park. The valley is about 11 kilometres long. It was first found in 1820. People made maps of it in the 1920s.

The valley runs from east to west. This is not common in these mountains. This shape lets air from the Atlantic Ocean reach it. Because of this, the weather stays moderate. It is not too hot or too cold. The area has many waterfalls. You can also find many wild animals there. One group of animals is the Pyrenean Chamois. These are a type of goat. They have a very large population here.

Tall peaks sit at the north-east end. One peak is Monte Perdido. It is 3,355 meters high. This is the third highest mountain in the Pyrenees. Its name means "lost mountain." People gave it this name. They could not see the peak from France. Other high peaks are nearby too. These are Cilindro de Marboré and Soum de Ramond.
