It is the largest desert in Argentina. It sits in southern Argentina and parts of Chile. To the west, the tall Andes mountains rise up. To the east, the Atlantic Ocean sits nearby.

The mountains help make the desert. They block wet air from the Pacific Ocean. This creates a rain shadow. This means the land stays very dry. The desert is also very windy. These strong winds blow dust over the ocean.

Many animals live here. You might see a guanaco or a puma. Small owls and foxes live here too. Plants like desert shrubs and tuft grasses grow in the soil.
