It is a glacial valley. This means it was shaped by ice a long time ago.

The shape of the valley is very special. It runs from east to west. This is unusual for the Pyrenees mountains. This path lets air from the Atlantic Ocean come inside. Because of this, the climate is moderate. It does not get too extreme. The area is also famous for its many waterfalls.

You can see many living things here too.

History helps us understand this land better. People first found the valley in 1820. However, they did not map it in detail right away. It took much longer to draw the land. Detailed maps did not appear until about the 1920s. These maps helped people see the valley's shape. Now, many people visit to see the wild beauty.

Many animals live in this mountain home. One group is the Pyrenean Chamois. This valley has one of the largest groups of them in Europe.

You can also see very tall mountains nearby. At the north-east end, you will find Monte Perdido. It is 3,355 metres high. This is the third highest mountain in the Pyrenees.

Three huge peaks stand together at the end of the valley. Monte Perdido is the most famous one. Its name means "lost mountain." People gave it this name because it was hidden. You could not see the peak from the French side. Other tall peaks are also there. These are Cilindro de Marboré at 3,328 metres. Soum de Ramond is also nearby at 3,263 metres.
