They are made of two sticks joined by a short rope or a metal chain. The rope is called a himo and the chain is called a kusari. Most traditional versions use strong wood like oak or loquat.

Some modern versions use metal, plastic, or fiberglass. People also make toy versions out of foam. Using these tools helps a person move their hands very quickly. It can also help them improve their posture and hand control.

There are many ways to use the nunchaku.

In Okinawan karate, people use the sticks to grip and lock. Filipino martial artists often use them to strike. Korean styles use them for both striking and defending. Some people even do freestyle nunchaku. This is a modern performance art. They spin the sticks to create a beautiful visual display. This is a type of competition held by the World Nunchaku Association.

No one knows exactly where the nunchaku began.

One idea is that they came from farming tools. For example, a tool used to thresh rice looks very similar. In the northern Philippines, a tool called the tabak-toyok is used for rice or soybeans. Another idea is that they came from wooden clappers called hyoshiki.

Night watchmen used these clappers to warn people about fires. Some people also think they were made from a horse bit.

Many people recognize the nunchaku from movies and stories.

The famous actor Bruce Lee used them in his 1972 film Fist of Fury. He also used them in the 1973 film Enter the Dragon. This helped make the nunchaku very popular all over the world. You might also know them from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The character Michelangelo uses them as his signature weapon. Because of this fame, some countries made laws to restrict them.

Laws about nunchaku can be quite complicated. In some places, like Germany, they have been illegal since 2006. In Australia, you need special forms to bring them into certain states. Some countries like Canada and Norway also have rules about them. In the United States, the rules change depending on the state. Some states have banned them, but many laws were changed later. In mainland China, it is perfectly legal to own them.
