The nunchaku is a traditional East Asian martial arts weapon. It consists of two sticks connected at their ends by a short metal chain or a rope.

People who practice with this weapon are often called nunchaku-jutsuka in Japanese. While they are used in combat, they are also excellent training tools. Practicing with them helps a person develop quick hand movements. It can also help improve a person's posture and hand control.

A nunchaku is made of several specific parts. Each stick has a top area called the kontoh. The handle itself is divided into three sections. These are the jukon-bu at the top, the chukon-bu in the center, and the kikon-bu at the bottom. The very bottom of the handle is the kontei.

If the sticks are connected by a rope, the rope is called a himo. This rope passes through a hole in the kontoh called an ana. If a metal chain is used, it is called a kusari. In China, the striking stick is known as the dragon stick. The handle is called the yang stick.

Different styles of martial arts use the nunchaku in unique ways. In Okinawan kobudo and karate, practitioners use the sticks to grip and lock. Filipino eskrima artists use them much like a single stick, with a focus on striking. Korean hapkido combines both offensive strikes and defensive locks. There is also an Iranian style called Sembkalah that uses them for defense and assault. Beyond combat, there is a modern style called freestyle nunchaku. This is a performance art used in competitions held by the World Nunchaku Association. Practitioners use the sticks as visual tools for beautiful displays.

The exact origins of the nunchaku remain unclear. One tradition says Emperor Taizu of Song invented them for war. He reportedly named them the Grand Ancestor Coiling Dragon Staff.

Other theories suggest they evolved from farming tools. A Southeast Asian rice threshing tool looks very similar to the nunchaku. In the northern Philippines, a tool called the tabak-toyok is used to thresh rice or soybeans. Another theory suggests they came from hyoshiki. These were wooden clappers used by village night watches to warn of fires.

Some also believe they may have started as an Okinawan horse bit called a muge.

Modern nunchaku come in many different materials. Traditional versions are made from strong, flexible hardwoods like oak, loquat, or pasania. Modern versions can be made of metal, plastic, or fiberglass. Some are even made of solid nylon or hollow aluminum. Toy versions are often made from polystyrene foam. For training, a rounded nunchaku is often used because it is heavy. For combat, an octagonal shape is more common. A well-made nunchaku must be properly balanced. The weight should be toward the outer edges of the sticks to help control the swing.

The nunchaku became globally famous through popular media. The actor and martial artist Bruce Lee used them in several famous films. He used them in the 1972 film Fist of Fury. He also used them in the 1973 film Enter the Dragon.

This helped the weapon become a symbol in pop culture. You can see the nunchaku used by the character Michelangelo in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This fame also led to many legal restrictions in the 1970s. Many countries passed laws because they feared the weapon's perceived danger.

Laws regarding nunchaku vary greatly around the world. In Germany, they have been illegal since April 2006. They were declared a strangling weapon by the government. In Australia, you may need a specific form to import them into certain areas. Countries like Canada, Norway, Russia, Poland, and Spain also have significant restrictions. In the United Kingdom, public possession is heavily restricted. In the United States, rules change depending on the state or city. While some places have bans, many have been repealed or overturned. For example, a 2018 court case found little evidence linking nunchaku to criminal conduct. In mainland China, possession of the weapon is legal.
