Wushu (sport)

Wushu is a comprehensive Chinese martial art that serves as both a traditional practice and a modern competitive sport. The term "Wushu" (武術) literally translates to "martial arts," with "Wu" meaning combat and "Shu" meaning art. It functions as a standardized compilation of various Chinese fighting styles. This system integrates diverse concepts from famous traditions like Shaolin kung fu, tai chi, and Wudangquan. By combining these elements, Wushu provides a unified way to study both "internal" and "external" martial movements. It is practiced globally through two distinct disciplines: choreographed routines and full-contact combat.

One primary discipline is known as taolu, which consists of choreographed forms or routines. In taolu competitions, athletes perform specific sequences of movements to demonstrate skill. Since 2003, competition rules have used a specific scoring system to evaluate these performances. The total score is based on three main categories. The "nandu," or degree of difficulty, accounts for 2 points of the 10-point total. The quality of movements is worth 5 points, and the overall performance is worth 3 points. Athletes may compete in individual routines, dual events called duilian, or group events called jiti. In jiti, groups must show perfect synchronization, often accompanied by instrumental music on a large performance carpet.

Taolu events are categorized by the type of movement or equipment used. Barehanded events include Changquan and Nanquan. Changquan is a highly popular and difficult style requiring extreme speed, power, and flexibility. Nanquan focuses on southern Chinese styles and emphasizes leg stability and hip coordination over acrobatics. Competitive tai chi is another taolu event, drawing from Yang, Chen, Wu, and Sun styles. Unlike traditional tai chi, competitive versions include difficult jumps and balances.

Athletes also compete using various weapons, which are divided into short and long categories. Short weapon events include Daoshu, which uses a dao (a saber), and Jianshu, which uses a jian (a straight sword).

In 1999, new events like Nandao and Taijijian were added to international competition. Long weapon events include Gunshu, which uses a staff, and Qiangshu, which uses a spear. While staffs were traditionally made of white wax wood, many modern athletes now use carbon fiber for durability. New events like Taijishan, which uses a Chinese hand fan, were created for the 2026 Summer Youth Olympics.

The second major discipline is sanda, also known as sport free-fighting. Sanda is a full-contact combat sport influenced by traditional Chinese boxing. It incorporates striking techniques with grappling methods like shuai jiao (wrestling) and Chin Na. In a sanda match, fighters use punches and kicks to score points or achieve a knockout. They can also use takedowns and throws to defeat an opponent.

Some matches take place on a raised platform called a lei tai. On a lei tai, a fighter can win by pushing their opponent off the platform.

The history of these martial arts spans thousands of years. During the Han Dynasty (206 BC–23 CE), the term used was "military fighting techniques." By the Song period (circa 960 CE), the name shifted to "martial arts." In 1928, the National Martial Arts Academy in Nanjing renamed the practice "national arts" (guoshu). However, the term reverted to Wushu during the early 1950s under the People's Republic of China. The modern version of wushu as a standardized sport was developed by the Chinese Communist Party in the 20th century. This movement aimed to modernize China by creating a national wushu system with standardized teaching curricula and instructor grading.

Today, wushu is a highly organized international sport. The International Wushu Federation (IWUF) manages global competitions and holds the World Wushu Championships every two years. Wushu is also an official event in several major multi-sport competitions. These include the Asian Games, the World Games, and the Southeast Asian Games. The sport connects ancient cultural traditions with modern athletic standards. It allows practitioners to preserve historical combat wisdom while participating in a regulated, global sporting community.
