It covers more than 55% of the country's land area. The shape of the land looks like an upside-down triangle. To the west, it touches the Sinai Peninsula desert. To the east, it meets the Arabah Valley. The region is very dry because it sits east of the Sahara.

Most of the area gets very little rain each year. In the south, the city of Eilat sits by the Gulf of Aqaba.

The landscape is made of rocky, dusty mountains and deep canyons.

There are three special features called makhteshim, which are huge crater-like canyons. These include Makhtesh Ramon, HaMakhtesh HaGadol, and HaMakhtesh HaKatan. You can also find wadis, which are dry riverbeds. These riverbeds might have plants that flower quickly after it rains.

In some parts, the soil is sandy and forms tall dunes. Other areas have a type of soil called loess. This soil does not let water sink in easily. This can lead to more water runoff and soil erosion.

People have lived in this desert for thousands of years.

Nomads moved through the area at least 4,000 to 7,000 years ago. In the Bronze Age, groups like the Canaanites and Nabateans lived here. The Nabateans were famous for their irrigation systems. They used water from springs and rain to help their cities grow.
