It sits at the northern tip of the Red Sea. In Israel, this water is called the Gulf of Eilat. In Jordan, it is known as the Gulf of Aqaba. The city is located near the Negev desert and the Arava valley. It is right next to the Egyptian city of Taba. To the east, it sits near the Jordanian port of Aqaba. You can even see the town of Haql in Saudi Arabia across the gulf.

Many people visit Eilat for a holiday at the beach or in the desert. The city is famous for its beautiful coral reefs. People go there to swim with dolphins at the Dolphin Reef. Others enjoy snorkeling or scuba diving in the clear water. The Coral Beach Nature Reserve holds the northernmost shallow coral reef on Earth. You can even see the sea from inside the Coral World Underwater Observatory.

For shopping, the city has many centers that are tax-free zones. Visitors can also hike through the Eilat Mountains or Timna Valley Park.

The name Eilat comes from very old stories. In 1949, a committee gave this name to a small place called Umm al-Rashrāsh. This place was once a small British police station with five clay huts.

The name refers to Elath, a place mentioned many times in the Hebrew Bible. The Bible says King Solomon built ships at a place called Etzion Gever, which is Eilat. The modern city was officially founded in 1952. It grew from a small town of port workers and soldiers into a large resort.

Eilat has a very warm and dry climate. It is a very sunny place with 360 sunny days every year. The summer heat can go above 40 degrees Celsius. Even though it is a desert, the warm sea helps keep the air from being too dry. The water stays between 20 and 28 degrees Celsius in the winter.

The landscape around the city is full of different rocks. You can find sandstone, limestone, and even mountains that rise above 800 meters. Because it is so dry, there is not much plant life in the desert.

Eilat is an important place for trade and travel. Its port helps ships move goods between Africa and Asia. In the past, the city was very important for moving oil. Today, the city is also planning for the future. A new airport called Ramon Airport opened in 2019 to help travelers. There are also plans to build a high-speed railway to connect the city to other places.
