It sits at the northern tip of the Red Sea. To the east is the Arabian Peninsula. The Sinai Peninsula sits to the west. This gulf is split between four different countries. These are Egypt, Israel, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. It is one of two gulfs made by the Sinai Peninsula. The other one is the Gulf of Suez. The Gulf of Suez is wider but not as deep.

The water here is a very special place for sea life. It is one of the best spots in the world for diving. The area is full of coral and many different marine animals. You might see dolphins, orcas, or even whale sharks. Some sea life is endemic to this area. This means those species are found almost nowhere else. People even sink ships on purpose to help. These sunken ships become artificial reefs for living things.

This place has a very long history of trade. Ancient Egyptians used the area for many years. They traded things like gold, linen, and copper. The Nabateans had a busy trade center called Ayla. This city is in the same place as modern Aqaba. Later, the Romans built a road called the Via Traiana Nova. This path helped connect Africa to Asia. Even the Ottoman Empire used Aqaba as a major port.

Many important cities sit along the coast of the gulf. Aqaba in Jordan is the largest population center. It had 148,398 people in 2015. Eilat in Israel is another major city. It had 50,724 people in 2020. Taba is an important city in Egypt. Haql is the largest city for Saudi Arabia on the gulf. These cities are very important for trade. The gulf gives Israel and Jordan access to the Red Sea.

The ground beneath the water is also very interesting. The gulf forms the southern end of the Dead Sea Transform. This is a place where the earth's plates move. There are three small basins called the Elat, Aragonese, and Dakar Deeps. These were made by faults in the earth. Movement on one of these faults caused an earthquake in 1995. Today, people visit the area for its warm climate. They stay at resorts or visit the nearby Wadi Rum. Many tourists come to see the history and the sea.
