Their name comes from the Arabic word badawī. They have lived in desert regions for a very long time. These lands include the Arabian Peninsula and North Africa. They also live in the Levant and Mesopotamia. Many Bedouin people follow the religion of Islam. A small number of Christian Bedouins lived in the Fertile Crescent until the 21st century. This culture is built on pride, courage, and hospitality.

Life for many Bedouin revolves around herding animals.

They care for sheep, goats, and dromedary camels. Camels are very special and are called a "gift from God." People use camels to travel across the sand. They also use them for milk and meat. Some Bedouin move their camps to find green grass for animals. In some places, they plant grain along their travel paths. This helps their livestock survive through the winter months.

They have herded animals in the Syrian steppe since 6000 BCE. By 850 BCE, they had many camps and settlements. Long ago, they earned money by guarding trade caravans. They also collected taxes from other groups. In the year 1326, a traveler named Ibn Battuta saw Bedouin guards in Sinai. They helped watch the roads and borders. During the Ottoman period, many changes happened to their way of life.

Bedouin society is organized into groups called clans or ʿašāʾir.

These groups are held together by shared ancestry. Families often live in a single tent. This unit usually has three or four adults and many children. They do not have one central government. Instead, they are led by tribal chiefs. These chiefs sometimes worked from oases to help with trade. Loyalty to the family is very important. A famous saying describes how they help their own kin first.

Art and tradition remain very important today.

Oral poetry is their most popular art form. This is called nabati poetry. A poet is a very respected person in a tribe. They also enjoy music and dances like the saas. Many Bedouin now live in modern cities. However, they still hold festivals to celebrate their culture. They teach young people how to knit tents and ride camels.
