It is the only part of Egypt located in West Asia. This makes it a land bridge between two continents. To the north, it touches the Mediterranean Sea. To the south, it meets the Red Sea. The peninsula has a triangular shape. It is connected to Africa by a wide strip of land called the Isthmus of Suez. This strip contains the famous Suez Canal.

Most of the land in Sinai is a dry desert. It is filled with mountains and is not very crowded. Because the mountains are so high, Sinai can be quite cold. In the winter, temperatures in some towns can drop to 0°C.

There are two main areas for government called governorates. These are North Sinai and South Sinai. Together, they cover about 60,000 square kilometres. About 600,000 people live in this region. The largest city is Arish, which is in the north. Other busy places are Sharm El Sheikh and El-Tor on the southern coast.

Sinai has a very long and busy history. Ancient Egyptians used the land to mine turquoise. They called the area names like Biau, which means "Mining Country."

They also called it "Ladders of Turquoise." During the Roman era, it was part of a province called Arabia Petraea. Later, the Emperor Justinian built a famous building here. This is Saint Catherine's Monastery.

It is the oldest working Christian monastery in the world. Many people travel from far away to see it.

In more recent years, Sinai has been part of many conflicts. The area was controlled by the Ottoman Empire and the United Kingdom. In 1956, there was a major event called the Suez Crisis. During this time, Israel, France, and the United Kingdom invaded the peninsula. Later, in 1967, Israel occupied the whole area during the Six-Day War. After the Yom Kippur War in 1973, things began to change. In 1982, Israel withdrew from most of the land because of a peace treaty.

Today, Sinai is a very popular place for travelers. People love to visit because of its beautiful natural settings. The Red Sea has very rich coral reefs for people to see.

It is also a place of great religious importance. Many people believe a mountain near the monastery is the biblical Mount Sinai. This makes the land feel very special to many faiths. Whether people come for the history or the sea, Sinai is a place of wonder.
