The Negev is a vast desert and semidesert region located in southern Israel.

It is a massive territory, covering more than 55% of Israel's total land area. The region forms an inverted triangle shape. To the west, it is contiguous with the Sinai Peninsula desert. To the east, it is bordered by the Arabah Valley. The Negev is a place of extreme environments and ancient geological history.

Geologically, the Negev is a rocky desert made of brown, dusty mountains. It contains three unique features known as makhteshim. These are enormous, craterlike box canyons. The three types are Makhtesh Ramon, HaMakhtesh HaGadol, and HaMakhtesh HaKatan. The landscape also features wadis, which are dry riverbeds. These wadis may host plants that flower briefly after rainfall.

Some areas contain sand dunes that reach heights of up to 30 meters. The region even contains the oldest continuously exposed surface on Earth, which is approximately 1.8 million years old.

The region is divided into five distinct ecological zones. The northern Negev is a Mediterranean zone with fertile soil and more rain. The western Negev has light, partially sandy soil. The central Negev, home to Beersheba, features loess. Loess is an impervious soil that prevents water from penetrating deeply. This leads to high water runoff and soil erosion.

The high plateau area sits between 400 and 1,000 meters above sea level. This area experiences extreme temperatures in both summer and winter. Finally, the Arabah Valley is very arid, receiving barely 100 millimeters of rain annually.

Life in the Negev requires specialized adaptations to survive the aridity. Vegetation is generally sparse but includes species like Acacia, Pistacia, and Retama. In the southern Negev, the doum palm can be found. The Evrona Nature Reserve marks the most northerly point in the world for this palm.

Wildlife includes the caracal, striped hyena, and Arabian wolf. The dorcas gazelle is quite common, with 1,000 to 1,500 individuals. There are also about 250 Arabian oryx and Asiatic wild ass living there.

Human history in the Negev spans thousands of years. Nomadic life existed here at least 4,000 to 7,000 years ago. During the Bronze Age, various groups such as the Canaanites and Nabateans established settlements. The Nabateans were highly skilled at managing water. They developed irrigation systems to support cities along the incense route.

These cities included Avdat, Mamshit, and Shivta. Later, the Roman Empire annexed the territory in 106 AD. During the Byzantine period, the population grew through advanced desert agriculture.

Byzantine farmers used sophisticated techniques to manage scarce water resources. They employed runoff rainwater collection and management systems. These systems harvested water from large areas and directed it onto smaller plots. They also used wadi terracing and flash-flood dams.

Researchers have also noted the presence of Tuleilat el-Anab, which are large piles of rocks. These rocks helped remove stones from plots and helped move topsoil via erosion. These methods allowed for the cultivation of plants that normally require more water.

Today, the Negev is a center for both administration and scientific research. Beersheba serves as the largest city and the administrative capital. The region includes various development towns like Dimona and Arad. It also contains Bedouin towns such as Rahat and Lakiya.

Education is a major focus, with Ben-Gurion University of the Negev located near Sde Boker. The university hosts specialized institutes for desert research and studies. The region is also transforming through new tourism, including wineries and spa resorts.
