Urbanization refers to the proportion of people living in cities and towns. In 2015, the Suez Governorate had an urbanization rate of 100 percent. This means every resident lived in an urban area. By January 2023, the total estimated population reached 788,421 people. The governorate is organized into several municipal divisions for administration. These include Arbaeen, Ganayen, Suez, Attaka, and Faisal. Arbaeen is the largest division with 287,620 residents. Faisal is another large area with 194,243 residents. The Port Suez Police Department also serves as a police-administrated area.

Industry is a primary driver of the local economy. The governorate hosts many different types of industrial zones. These include zones for light industry and heavy industry. There are also new urban community industrial zones. Specific areas include the North Ataka Suez Gulf Industrial Zone. Other locations are the North Ataka Industrial Zone and the West Ataka Industrial Zone. There is also a Petrochemicals Zone located at the North Sumed Pipeline. In mid-2018, Egypt and Russia signed an agreement. This deal focuses on the establishment of a Russian Industrial Zone within the governorate.

Trade and maritime activity are supported by five major ports. These are the Ain Sokhna port and the Suez port. The region also contains the Adabeya port and the petrol basin port. The fifth is the El-Atka fishing port. These ports are vital to the regional economy. The economy is further strengthened by various natural resources. People extract limestone, clay, and coal from the land. They also find petroleum, marble, and lime. While many things are produced, the chief export of Suez is papayas.

Special economic areas help manage trade and investment. The Suez Public Free Zone was established in 1975. This zone is divided between two main locations. These locations are Suez Port and Adabeya. The Governing Authority for Investment and Free Zones, known as GAFI, manages these industrial zones. These systems allow for organized commercial growth within the governorate.

Tourism provides another important sector for the region. Many people visit Suez for recreation or medical needs. Ain Sokhna is a well-known destination for these purposes.

Visitors can also explore natural and historical sites. These include Moses' springs and Judaic Hill at El-Khoor. These attractions draw people to the north-eastern coast of Egypt.

Suez is a complex intersection of industry, geography, and population. Its position near the Gulf of Suez makes it a maritime hub. The high urbanization rate shows how concentrated the population is in cities. The mix of natural resources and industrial zones creates a diverse economy. From the fishing at El-Atka to the industrial zones in Ataka, the region plays many roles. It remains a central part of the Egyptian landscape.
