It sits within the Yanbaru region of the island. Water touches almost every side of this land. Nago Bay is found to the east. The Haneda Inland Sea lies to the north. To the west, you will find the East China Sea.

Most of the area is made of mountains. There are only a few flat plains here. The highest point is Mount Yae. A US military communications tower sits on its summit. Because of this tower, people cannot visit the very top.

Many different roads help people travel through this area. The Okinawa Expressway links Naha to the city of Nago. Japan National Route 58 crosses the bottom of the peninsula. Other paths like Route 505 and Route 449 connect local towns. Route 449 and Route 404 run along the edges of the land. Bridges are also very important here. They connect the peninsula to Sesokojima and Yagaji Island.

This land has a long and busy history. In medieval times, it was the center of power for the Hokuzan kingdom. The area saw fierce fighting during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. By April 10 of that year, most of the peninsula was secured. A place called Motobu Airfield was once located here too. However, that airfield was decommissioned after the war ended. The peninsula has seen many big events over the years. These include the invasion of Hokuzan in 1416 and the invasion of Ryukyu in 1609.

There are many amazing things to see and do. You can visit the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium. Its tank is the third largest in the entire world. Travelers also visit Nago Castle and Nakijin Castle. The Native Okinawan Village is another place to explore. If you love the ocean, you can visit many beaches. These include Uppama Beach, Emerald Beach, and Nagahama Beach. The Shiokawa River is also a special site. It is a national natural treasure and the shortest river in Japan. This tiny river even contains salt water.

Nature and culture make this place very unique. The ground is made of many different types of rock. Some parts are made of Paleozoic metamorphic and igneous rocks. Other parts belong to the Pleistocene Ryukyu Group. The peninsula is also famous for its people. A man named Kanbun Uechi lived here. He was the founder of Uechi-ryū, a style of karate. This style is one of the main types of karate in Okinawa. Many people come to learn about this history and see the beautiful views.
