It is a piece of land surrounded by water on most sides. To the east, the peninsula meets Nago Bay. The Haneda Inland Sea sits to the north. To the west, the land is bordered by the East China Sea. Much of the peninsula consists of mountainous terrain. Only a few small plains exist within this rugged area. The northeasternmost point of this land is known as Cape Bise.

The geology of the peninsula is complex and varies by location. The eastern side is shaped by the Nago fault. This fault line bounds the northwestern coast of Okinawa Island. In certain areas, the ground is composed of Paleozoic metamorphic and igneous rocks. These are rocks that have changed due to heat or pressure. The northern part of the peninsula belongs to the Pleistocene Ryukyu Group. This group refers to a specific layer of geological formations. These different rock types help scientists understand the history of the land.

Transportation networks allow people to move through the peninsula and its surrounding islands. The Okinawa Expressway provides a major link from Naha to Nago. Japan National Route 58 crosses the southern base of the peninsula. Several other routes connect the local municipalities of Motobu, Nago, and Nakijin. Route 505 connects Motobu Town to Haneji. Route 449 connects Motobu to Nago. Additionally, Routes 404 and 449 run along the perimeter of the peninsula. Bridges are also essential for reaching nearby land. Bridges connect the peninsula to Sesokojima and Yagaji Island. Kōri-jima is also nearby, connected to Yagaji Island by a bridge.

History has played a major role in shaping the Motobu Peninsula. During medieval times, the area served as the center of power for the Hokuzan kingdom. This era saw the Invasion of Hokuzan in 1416. Later, the area experienced the Invasion of Ryukyu in 1609. The peninsula also saw significant military action during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. Fighting occurred on Mount Yae during this conflict. By April 10, 1945, most of the peninsula had been secured. A Motobu Airfield was once located here, but it was decommissioned after 1945. The summit of Mount Yae is currently off-limits due to a US military communications tower.

Today, the peninsula is a site for many notable landmarks and attractions. The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is a major destination. It features an aquarium tank that is the third largest in the world. Visitors can also explore Nago Castle and Nakijin Castle. For those interested in local culture, the Native Okinawan Village is available. The area is also famous for its natural features like the Shiokawa River. This river is a national natural treasure. It is recognized as the shortest river in Japan and contains salt water. Many beaches also attract visitors, such as Emerald Beach and Nagahama Beach.

The peninsula has also contributed to global culture through its people. Kanbun Uechi was a resident of the Motobu Peninsula. He was the founder of Uechi-ryū. This is one of the primary styles of karate practiced in Okinawa. The region has hosted large events in the past. For example, it was a site for Expo '75. The area also hosted the Miss International pageant in 1975. These events show how the peninsula connects to the wider world.

In summary, the Motobu Peninsula is a diverse geographic area. It combines rugged mountains with significant historical sites. The mix of Paleozoic rocks and the Ryukyu Group creates a unique landscape. Its connection to the sea through Nago Bay and the East China Sea defines its character. From the shortest river in Japan to world-class aquariums, the peninsula offers much to observe. It remains a vital part of the Yanbaru region of Okinawa.
