Microdictyon was a tiny worm from a long time ago.

It lived on the seafloor during the Cambrian period. These worms looked like small caterpillars. They had many tube-like legs. Each leg had two tiny, curved claws. The claws helped them grab things.

Most of their body was covered in armor. This armor was made of small plates called sclerites. These plates looked like a fine, net-like mesh. They had tiny holes and mushroom-shaped bumps. Scientists think these plates helped with defense. They may have also helped the worm's muscles attach.

The worm grew by a process called moulting. This is a way to grow new parts. They did not grow all at once. New plates grew under the old ones. They started in the middle of the body. Then the new plates spread to the ends. The old plates stayed on top for a while. Eventually, the worm came out of its old skin. The new plates were already hard.
