Its body was shaped like an oval. It had a soft foot on its bottom to move. Most of its body was covered in hard plates. We call these plates sclerites. These plates were made of a tough material. They grew in eight rows. They overlapped like roof tiles. This helped protect the animal from enemies.

Larger Wiwaxia had long spines on their backs. These spines also helped keep them safe. Wiwaxia used rows of tiny teeth to eat. It could scrape food off the sea floor. Scientists are still studying what kind of animal it was. Some think it was related to worms. Other scientists think it was related to molluscs. Molluscs are animals like snails or clams. The debate is still going on today.
