Halkieriids were strange animals that lived in the sea. They lived a very long time ago. Most of them lived during the Cambrian period.

These animals had armor on their bodies. This armor was made of tiny plates. Scientists call these plates sclerites. We find these plates in many places. They have been found in Greenland and China. They were also found in Australia and Canada. Some fossils were even found in Siberia.

Scientists study these fossils to learn about life. They want to know how halkieriids are related to animals today. Some think they are close to molluscs, like snails. Other scientists think they are close to annelids, which are worms. Some even think they are related to brachiopods. Brachiopods are animals with two shells.

It is hard to be sure. The fossils are often just small bits. This makes it tricky to see the whole animal. Scientists use many tools to solve this puzzle. They look at the shape of the shells. They also look at how the shells grew. This helps them map the tree of life.
