A long time ago, the Earth had a giant landmass.

This land was called Pannotia. Its name means "all southern land." This is because it sat near the South Pole. Africa was in the center of this big land. Other lands like India and Australia were all around it.

Pannotia formed in a special way. It came from an older land called Rodinia. Some scientists say Rodinia turned itself inside out to make Pannotia. This happened through a process called extroversion. This means oceans sank under the edges of the land. This helped the land come together.

But Pannotia did not last forever. It began to break apart about 560 million years ago.

A new sea called the Iapetus Ocean opened up. This sea pulled the land pieces away from each other. As the land split, the world changed. Sea levels rose and the climate changed too. This gave many new animals homes in the water. These animals began to grow and change very quickly. This time of fast change is called the Cambrian explosion.
