Pannotia

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Pannotia was a relatively short-lived supercontinent during the Neoproterozoic era. A supercontinent is a massive landmass formed by the movement of Earth's tectonic plates. The name Pannotia comes from Greek words meaning "all southern land." This name reflects its position, as the landmass was centered on the South Pole.

Some scientists also refer to it as the Vendian supercontinent, Greater Gondwana, or the Pan-African supercontinent. While its existence is a key part of Earth's history, some researchers argue it may not have been a single, fully assembled landmass. A 2022 paper suggests the land began breaking up even before it was completely joined together.

The formation of Pannotia was a complex geological process. It began during the Pan-African orogeny, which is a period of mountain building. This process occurred between 650 and 500 million years ago (Ma). Scientists believe Pannotia formed when the older supercontinent, Rodinia, turned itself inside out. This specific mechanism is called extroversion. In extroversion, the oceans located on the exterior of the landmass subduct, or sink, beneath the edges of the continents.

This was different from the later formation of Pangaea, which used introversion. In introversion, interior oceans subduct over a geoid high, which is a raised area in the Earth's shape.

The assembly of Pannotia involved many different continental blocks. The Congo Craton, a large piece of stable crust, played a major role. It became lodged between the northern and southern halves of Rodinia about 750 Ma. The peak of this mountain-building event occurred between 640 and 610 Ma. During this time, the oceanic crust from the Mirovia superocean was accreted, or added, to the growing landmass. One major event was the East African Orogeny, which was a collision between eastern and western Gondwana.

Other collisions happened in Brazil between 600 and 500 Ma involving Amazonia and the São Francisco-Congo-Kasai cratons.

Geologists have different names for the parts and stages of this era. Some use the term "Greater Gondwanaland" to show that the later Gondwana was part of this larger mass. The name Pannotia was chosen by researchers based on the term "Pannotios." This term described the cycle of tectonic activity common to the Gondwana continents. Another researcher, Powell, discussed different naming options for these ancient landmasses. While some suggested the name "Kanatia" for the older Rodinia, the name Pannotia remained the standard for this later Neoproterozoic supercontinent.

When Pannotia was fully formed, Africa sat at the very center. It was surrounded by several other large pieces of land. These included South America, Arabia, Madagascar, India, Antarctica, and Australia. Other groups of land were also present. The Cathaysian and Cimmerian terranes were located along the northern margins of east Gondwana. The Avalonian-Cadomian terranes were found along the active northern margins of western Gondwana. These pieces would eventually become parts of central Europe, Britain, and the North American east coast.

The breakup of Pannotia began around 560 Ma. This happened during the late Ediacaran and early Cambrian periods. The primary cause was the opening of the Iapetus Ocean. This opening separated Laurentia from other regions like Baltica, Amazonia, and Río de la Plata. As the land split, the world experienced dramatic changes. Sea levels rose, and the climate and ocean chemistry shifted significantly. These environmental changes were closely tied to the movement of the continents.

The end of Pannotia coincided with a major biological event called the Cambrian explosion. This was a period of rapid evolution where many new types of animals appeared. The opening of the Iapetus Ocean and other Cambrian seas created many new habitats. This allowed for the rapid diversification of metazoans, which are multicellular animals. Trilobites are a notable example from this time. They originated in the Neoproterozoic and began to diversify before the breakup was complete.

This era shows how the movement of the Earth's crust can change the very nature of life on the planet.
