Long ago, Earth went through several ice ages. This happened about 2.5 to 2.2 billion years ago. We call this the Huronian glaciation. Scientists find proof in rocks called diamictite. These rocks were made by moving ice.

This cold time happened because the air changed. Tiny life forms called cyanobacteria began making oxygen. This was part of the Great Oxygenation Event. Before this, the air had lots of methane. Methane is a gas that keeps the planet warm. The new oxygen reacted with the methane. This turned the methane into carbon dioxide and water. These gases do not trap heat as well.

Because the warm gases left, the Earth cooled down. This is called an icehouse effect. The cold air also caused water to fall from the sky. This made the world even colder. Most life back then did not use oxygen. The new oxygen was toxic to them. This caused a very large extinction event. It was the first and longest one in history. Many tiny living things died out. Later, new life forms that liked oxygen began to grow.
