Microdictyon was a strange worm that lived a very long time ago. 
The worm used its armor to protect itself. The sclerites were shaped like small, round disks. They had a net-like pattern with tiny holes. At the spots where the holes met, there were little bumps. These bumps often looked like tiny mushrooms. 
Scientists have been finding pieces of these worms for a long time. In 1975, someone found the first plates in England. Later, in 1981, Stefan Bengston and his team named the genus Microdictyon. They first found the plates in South Kazakhstan. At first, they did not know what kind of animal made them. Some people thought they might belong to sponges or jellyfish-like animals. It took more discoveries to solve the mystery. By 1986, the scientists published a better description of the animal.
We know a lot about Microdictyon from fossils found in China. 
Microdictyon lived a life very different from ours. It was an epibenthic animal, which means it walked along the bottom of the sea. It used its many legs to crawl over the seafloor. Its tiny claws were likely used for grabbing or climbing. Some scientists thought it might grab onto other animals to eat. They found Microdictyon fossils near fossils of an animal called Eldonia. Even though we now know Eldonia lived on the seafloor too, they likely shared the same home. This helps us picture a busy, ancient ocean floor.
Microdictyon is an extinct genus of lobopodian worms from the Cambrian period. These ancient creatures are famous for their unique armor made of net-like sclerite plates. While many fossils only show these isolated plates, special sites like the Chengjiang Lagerstätte in China preserve their soft bodies. These fossils allow scientists to see the whole animal, not just the hard parts. Understanding Microdictyon helps researchers learn how early animals developed complex bodies and protective structures. 
The body of Microdictyon was long and caterpillar-like. Based on the species Microdictyon sinicum, the trunk was quite elongate. It possessed 10 pairs of tube-like limbs and 9 pairs of netted sclerite plates. Each pair of limbs was linked to a single pair of plates. However, the very last set of limbs shared a plate pair with the legs in front of them. The limbs were undifferentiated, meaning they all looked similar. Each leg ended in a pair of small, curved claws. The body and legs were also covered in small bumps called papillae. 
The armor plates, or sclerites, had a very specific design. They were subcircular and convex, meaning they curved outward like a dome. Each plate featured a fine, hexagonal mesh of rounded, hollow pits. At the points where the mesh lines met, there were specialized nodes. These nodes often had a mushroom-like shape. The walls of these sclerites were thin, and they were surrounded by a thin marginal rim. In some rare cases, large spines grew randomly on the surface of the plates. These plates sat on small mounds that caused the body to swell slightly.
Scientists have spent decades uncovering the history of this genus. The first sclerite plates were discovered in 1975 in the Strenuella Limestone of Comley, England. In 1981, Stefan Bengston, Vladimir Missarzhevsky, and S. C. Matthews established the genus Microdictyon. They initially used plates from South Kazakhstan to name it. At first, the identity of the animal was a mystery. Researchers suggested the plates might belong to sponges, radiolarians, or echinoderms. It was not until 1989 that the first complete, soft-bodied specimens were found in China. These fossils were named Microdictyon sinicum.
One of the most interesting things about Microdictyon is how it grew. It used a process called asynchronous moulting to increase in size. This means it did not shed its entire outer layer at once. Instead, new, larger plates formed underneath the old ones. This growth started in the middle of the body. It then spread toward the front and the back. The old skin would eventually rupture on the top of the animal. The Microdictyon would then emerge with its new, hardened plates already in place. This method is similar to how modern isopods moult.
Microdictyon lived an epibenthic life, which means it walked along the seafloor. It used its lobopodous limbs to move across the ocean bottom. Its claws were not ideal for walking on soft mud. Instead, they were likely used for climbing or grabbing objects. Some scientists once thought Microdictyon grabbed onto a swimming animal called Eldonia to feed. We now know Eldonia lived on the seafloor, but the two animals were still often found together. This suggests they had an ecological link, perhaps involving feeding on carcasses. 
Today, scientists recognize at least 11 valid species of Microdictyon. These include species like M. effusum, M. sinicum, and M. montezumaensis. Because the plates change shape along the body, researchers must look at tiny details to tell them apart. They focus on the arrangement of the holes and the shape of the nodes. Microdictyon remains a vital subject for studying the evolution of complex life. It shows how early animals used specialized armor and unique growth patterns to survive in ancient seas.
