Groening’s journey began with a comic strip called Life in Hell.

He first sold a cartoon to a magazine named Wet in 1978. Later, he published his work in the Los Angeles Reader. This comic strip eventually appeared in 250 weekly newspapers.

He even started a company to handle his comic books. He worked many different jobs in Los Angeles before becoming successful. He was a dishwasher and even a clerk at a record store.

In 1985, a producer named James L. Brooks wanted to work with him. Brooks wanted to use the characters from Life in Hell for a TV show. Groening was worried about losing the rights to his own characters.

To stay safe, he quickly drew a brand new family. He sketched the Simpsons while sitting in an office lobby. He named the characters after his own family members. He named the father Homer and the mother Marge after his parents. He named his daughters Lisa and Maggie after his sisters.

Making these characters involved many careful design choices.

Groening wanted the characters to be easy to recognize by their shapes. He gave Marge a tall beehive hairstyle. He gave Bart nine spikes of hair on his head. He even hid his own initials in Homer’s hair and ear. The very first Simpsons cartoons appeared on The Tracey Ullman Show in 1987. The full half-hour series then premiered on December 17, 1989. It started with a special episode about Christmas.

Groening has received many honors for his amazing talent.

In 2004, he won a British Comedy Award for his comedy. He even received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012. His life shows how a simple drawing can change television forever.
