Groening's career began with self-published works and small magazine sales. In 1977, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue writing. He worked many jobs, such as a dishwasher and a record store clerk.

He created a comic book called Life in Hell to describe his experiences. He made his first professional sale to Wet magazine in 1978. Later, he published cartoons in the Los Angeles Reader. At its peak, Life in Hell was carried in 250 weekly newspapers. This comic strip served as the foundation for his future success.

The creation of The Simpsons followed a specific sequence of events. In 1985, producer James L. Brooks contacted Groening. Brooks wanted to adapt Life in Hell for animated segments on The Tracey Ullman Show. Groening feared he would lose the ownership rights to his existing characters. To protect his work, he quickly sketched a new family in an office lobby. He created Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie. These characters were distinct from his previous work.

Character design played a vital role in making the Simpsons recognizable. Groening designed the family so they could be identified by their silhouettes. He named the characters after his own family members. Homer and Marge were named after his parents. Lisa and Maggie were named after his sisters. He chose the name Bart as an anagram of the word "brat." He even hid his initials, M and G, in Homer's hairline and ear.
