It serves as a satirical depiction of American life and Western culture. The show uses caricature to examine the human condition and modern society. Many critics consider it a landmark in television history. Time magazine even named it the greatest television series of the 20th century.

It has inspired many other adult-oriented animated series that followed.

The series centers on the Simpson family in the fictional town of Springfield.

Homer Simpson is the father and works as a safety inspector at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant. His personality is often described as buffoonish and careless. Marge Simpson is the mother and is depicted as a stereotypical housewife. Their children include Bart, a ten-year-old prankster, and Lisa, a precocious eight-year-old activist.

Maggie is the baby of the family who communicates primarily through her pacifier. Despite their dysfunctional nature, the family maintains strong emotional bonds.

Creating the characters involved a unique and rapid process.

Creator Matt Groening conceived the family while waiting to pitch an idea to producer James L. Brooks. He named the characters after his own family members. He chose the name Bart as an anagram for "brat." He also chose the surname Simpson because it sounded similar to "simpleton." The characters' iconic yellow skin was a creative choice by colorist Gyorgyi Kovacs Peluce. She felt the characters would look strange with natural flesh tones. Groening found the idea of yellow skin with blue hair to be hilarious.

The show's production history began with short animated sketches. These shorts first appeared on The Tracey Ullman Show on April 19, 1987. After three seasons of shorts, the show was developed into a half-hour primetime series. The full series debuted on December 17, 1989, with the episode "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire." It eventually became the longest-running American animated series and the longest-running American sitcom.

The production has transitioned from Gracie Films and 20th Television to Disney Television Studios.

A unique aspect of the show is its "floating timeline."

This mechanism allows the characters to experience yearly milestones without actually aging. For instance, Bart remains ten years old even as decades pass in the real world. The show uses a loose and often inconsistent continuity to serve its jokes. This includes flashbacks that may contradict one another. For example, episodes can depict Homer and Marge as high schoolers in the 1970s. Other episodes might place them in different time periods entirely.

The world of Springfield is populated by a massive supporting cast.

Originally, many of these characters were intended to be one-time jokes. However, they often gained expanded roles and their own episodes. Notable characters include the neighbor Ned Flanders and the celebrity Krusty the Clown.

The town itself is intentionally evasive regarding its specific location in the United States. Groening named it Springfield to make it feel familiar to many different people. He noted that the name is one of the most common city names in America.

The series has achieved massive commercial and critical success.

It has won 37 Primetime Emmy Awards, 34 Annie Awards, and 2 Peabody Awards. The Simpson family was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on January 14, 2000. Beyond television, the brand includes a billion-dollar merchandising industry. This includes comic books, video games, and books. A feature-length film, The Simpsons Movie, was released in 2007 to great success. The show continues to grow, with a renewal recently bringing the expected episode total to 858.
