Married... with Children was a groundbreaking American television sitcom. Created by Michael G. Moye and Ron Leavitt, it aired on the Fox Broadcasting Company. The series premiered on April 5, 1987. It concluded its original run on June 9, 1997. This show holds the title of the longest-running live-action sitcom ever aired on Fox. It was actually the first primetime series broadcast on the new Fox network. It followed the second series overall for the network, after the debut of The Late Show in 1986.

The series is set in Chicago and focuses on the Bundy family. Al Bundy, played by Ed O'Neill, is a former high school football star. He was an "All State Fullback" at Polk High, where he scored four touchdowns in one game. Now, he works a difficult job as a salesman of women's shoes. His wife, Peggy Bundy, played by Katey Sagal, is often lazy and prefers watching talk shows. They have two children, Kelly and Bud. Kelly, played by Christina Applegate, is often described as a "dumb blonde." Bud, played by David Faustino, is the younger son who sometimes acts more level-headed. The family members often tease and mock one another, creating a very different dynamic than other TV families.

The show also features the Bundys' neighbors, who provide constant conflict. Marcy Rhoades, played by Amanda Bearse, is an educated banker and a feminist. She is also the founder of a group called FANG, which stands for "Feminists Against Neanderthal Guys." Al and Marcy often bicker because of their different views. In the early seasons, Marcy is married to Steve Rhoades, played by David Garrison. Steve is a stuffy banker who loves his Mercedes-Benz. After Steve leaves to become a forest ranger at Yosemite National Park, Marcy marries Jefferson D'Arcy. Jefferson, played by Ted McGinley, is a "pretty-boy scammer" and a former CIA agent. He becomes Al's best friend despite his lack of a steady job.

Producing the show involved several technical stages and location changes. The first two seasons were videotaped in front of a studio audience at the ABC Television Center in Los Angeles. During seasons 3 through 8, production moved to Sunset Gower Studios in Hollywood. For the final seasons, 9 through 11, the show was recorded at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City. The production was handled by Columbia Pictures Television. For the first season, it worked through Embassy Communications. For the remaining ten seasons, it was produced through ELP Communications. This movement across different studios helped sustain the show's long production life.

Developing the show required significant changes to the cast and concept. The original working title was "Not the Cosbys." This was intended to mock the polite family sitcoms common in the mid-1980s. The creators were encouraged to be as outrageous as possible. In the pilot episode, different actors played Kelly and Bud. The producers decided to re-cast the roles with Christina Applegate and David Faustino. They even re-shot the scenes to ensure the actors had better chemistry with the parents. This decision helped establish the iconic family dynamic that fans eventually loved.

During its peak in the early 1990s, the show was very popular. It averaged more than 20 million viewers every single week. Despite this, it was not always a massive ratings success compared to the "Big Three" networks. This was partly because Fox was a new startup network. Many people could only find Fox on low-quality UHF channels. Some areas did not have the network at all until the launch of Foxnet in 1991. However, the success of The Simpsons helped draw more viewers to Fox. This allowed Married... with Children to rank in the Nielsen Top 50 from Season 4 through Season 8.

The show's legacy is defined by its unique style and cultural impact. Critical reception was often mixed because the humor was sexually charged and coarse. Some critics called it "nasty-minded" or "vulgar." However, it stood in stark contrast to the gentle family shows of that era. In 2008, Entertainment Weekly named it one of the "New TV Classics," placing it at number 94. The series ran for a total of 11 seasons and 259 episodes. Even after the show ended in 1997, interest remained high. In May 2022, news emerged that an animated revival was being developed.
