O'Neill's journey began in Youngstown, Ohio, where he was born on April 12, 1946. He grew up in an Irish-American Catholic family. His father worked as a steel mill worker and a truck driver. His mother was a social worker and a homemaker. During his youth, O'Neill worked in construction and at a steel mill starting at age 14. He attended Ursuline High School, where he played football. He later attended Ohio University to major in history. He eventually transferred to Youngstown State University, where he played as a defensive lineman from 1967 to 1968.

Before finding fame on screen, O'Neill pursued a career in professional football. In 1969, he signed as an undrafted free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He played under rookie head coach Chuck Noll. However, he was cut during training camp. He had to compete for a roster spot against legendary players like Joe Greene and L.C. Greenwood. These men became famous as part of the "Steel Curtain" defense. After his football career ended, O'Neill worked as a substitute social studies teacher. He also re-enrolled at Youngstown State to join their new theater program.

His acting career progressed through several distinct stages. He first gained attention on Broadway in the 1979 play *Knockout*. He played a boxer named Paddy Klonski. A critic for *The New York Times* described his presence as "genuinely frightening." This performance led to his film debut in the crime thriller *Cruising* (1980). He later appeared in many films, including *Wayne's World* (1992) and *Little Giants* (1994). He also performed in dramas such as *Prefontaine* (1997) and *The Bone Collector* (1999). He even took on unique roles like Relish the Troll King in *The 10th Kingdom*.

O'Neill reached massive stardom through two major television roles. In 1987, he began starring in the Fox sitcom *Married... with Children*. He played Al Bundy, a working-class father in Chicago. The show ran for 11 seasons, ending in 1997. He earned two Golden Globe nominations for this role. Later, from 2009 to 2020, he played Jay Pritchett on the ABC sitcom *Modern Family*. This role earned him three Primetime Emmy nominations. He also won four Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

In addition to live-action acting, O'Neill is a skilled voice actor. He has provided voices for several major animated films. He played Mr. Litwak in *Wreck-It Ralph* (2012) and *Ralph Breaks the Internet* (2018). In 2016, he voiced Hank the Octopus in the Pixar film *Finding Dory*. O'Neill noted that he did not realize how large his role was at first. He only suspected his importance as he recorded more lines with the character Dory. This work allows him to use his vocal range to create memorable characters.

Beyond the entertainment industry, O'Neill is a dedicated martial artist. He was introduced to Brazilian jiu-jitsu in 1991 by his friend, John Milius. He trained under the mentorship of Rorion Gracie for many years. In December 2007, after 16 years of consistent practice, he earned his black belt. O'Neill has called this the greatest achievement of his life, alongside his children. He also holds an honorary Doctor of Arts degree from Youngstown State University. However, he later announced his intention to return the degree due to university leadership decisions in 2023.
