Born Ramón Gerard Antonio Estévez on August 3, 1940, he is a versatile performer in both film and television. His body of work includes highly acclaimed roles in major motion pictures and long-running dramatic series. Throughout his career, he has received numerous prestigious honors. These include three Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and four Screen Actors Guild Awards. He is recognized for his ability to portray complex characters across many different genres.

To pursue his acting ambitions in New York City, he adopted the professional stage name Martin Sheen. He created this name by combining parts of the names of a casting director and a Catholic archbishop. While he uses this name for his professional identity, his legal name remains Estévez on documents like his passport. This decision was partly driven by a desire to overcome initial hesitation from casting directors.

His rise to prominence was marked by several breakthrough performances in the 1970s. In 1973, he starred in the crime drama Badlands, playing an antisocial murderer.

Shortly after, he achieved widespread recognition for his role in the Vietnam War drama Apocalypse Now in 1979. This production was particularly intense for Sheen. While filming in the Philippine jungle during the typhoon season, he suffered a minor heart attack. He had to crawl to a road to seek medical help. His brother, Joe Estevez, even stood in for him during some shots while he recovered.

Sheen has demonstrated a remarkable ability to portray significant historical figures. He has taken on the roles of several United States presidents and leaders. For instance, he portrayed John F. Kennedy in the 1983 miniseries Kennedy. He also played Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy in the television special The Missiles of October. In the film Gandhi, he participated in a large-scale biographical epic. His range extends to modern political drama as well. He famously played President Josiah "Jed" Bartlet on the NBC series The West Wing from 1999 to 2006.

His television work has been just as impactful as his film career. For his role in The West Wing, he earned a Golden Globe Award in 2000. He also received six Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. This tied a record for the most nominations in that category without a win. Beyond prestige dramas, he has appeared in various television formats. This includes guest roles in series like Mission: Impossible and Columbo. He also provided voice-over work, such as narrating the Eyewitness series.

Acting is a central theme in Sheen's family life. He is the father of four children, and all of them have become actors.

Beyond the screen, Sheen is involved in social justice and political activism. His commitment to these causes began in his early twenties while working with the Catholic Worker Movement in New York. He met activist Dorothy Day during this time, an experience that later influenced his role in the film Entertaining Angels.
