Martin and Lewis were a legendary American comedy duo.

The team consisted of singer Dean Martin and comedian Jerry Lewis. They officially debuted at the 500 Club in Atlantic City on July 25, 1946. Their professional partnership lasted exactly ten years. Before they joined forces, Martin worked as a nightclub singer. Lewis performed a comedy act by lip-synching to various records. Together, they became one of the most successful entertainment teams in history.

The duo's performance style relied on a unique blend of music and chaos. Initially, they used pre-scripted gags, but these were not well received. The club owner, Skinny D'Amato, even threatened to end their contract. To save their act, they began to improvise. This means they made up jokes and actions in the moment. Martin would sing his songs while Lewis acted as a disruptive busboy. Lewis would drop plates and mock the formal decorum of the club. They used slapstick, which is physical comedy involving exaggerated movements. They often engaged in playful chases around the stage to delight audiences.

As their popularity grew, Martin and Lewis expanded into many different media. They moved from nightclubs to performing on NBC radio starting in 1948. They were also early stars on television variety shows.

They appeared on the first episode of Ed Sullivan's "Toast of the Town" in June 1948. Later, they became regular guests on the "Colgate Comedy Hour" during the 1950s.

This show featured musical numbers, sketch comedy, and Lewis's solo pantomimes. They even used a technique called breaking the fourth wall to talk directly to the audience.

Their rise to fame was driven by a massive, diverse fan base. Jerry Lewis once explained that their appeal reached everyone. While Dean's fans included men and women, Jerry's fans included women, Jews, and children. Combined, they captured the interest of all types of people. By 1951, they were the hottest and highest-paid act in show business.

During movie tours, fans would crowd the streets so heavily that the duo performed "free shows" from fire escapes and dressing room windows. They would occasionally toss items like hats or shoes to the adoring crowds.

Success brought significant wealth and professional opportunities. In 1949, Paramount Pictures producer Hal Wallis signed them for film work. They received $75,000 for their initial films, which was a respectable salary in the 1940s. They also formed their own company, York Productions, to co-produce one film per year.

This allowed them to maintain control over their independent projects, such as "At War with the Army" in 1950. Between their films, radio, and television appearances, the duo earned millions of dollars.

Despite their success, the partnership eventually collapsed due to internal tension. Martin often played the "straight man," which is the serious character who reacts to the comedian. As Lewis's comic antics began to dominate their sixteen Paramount films, Martin felt frustrated. Their mutual animosity grew during the filming of "Hollywood or Bust" in 1956. The professional breakup was finalized on July 25, 1956. This date marked exactly ten years since their first official performance as a team. Following the split, the two men did not speak privately for twenty years.

After the duo disbanded, both men achieved massive solo success. Martin became a famous recording artist and a movie star in films like "Rio Bravo."
