Abbott and Costello were a legendary American comedy duo. They consisted of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello. Their work spanned radio, film, and television. During the 1940s and 1950s, they were the most popular comedy team. During the Second World War, they were the highest-paid entertainers in the world. They are remembered for their incredible timing and unique character dynamics.

The duo relied on a specific comedic structure to create laughter. Bud Abbott played the "straight man," a serious character who controlled the scene. Lou Costello played the "dimwitted" comic who often became confused or overwhelmed. They utilized a technique called "patter," which involved very rapid-fire dialogue. Their most famous routine was "Who's on First?" This sketch used baseball player names to create linguistic confusion.

The pair first worked together in 1935 at the Eltinge Burlesque Theater in New York City. This partnership began by chance when Costello's regular partner became ill. Abbott substituted for the partner, and the chemistry was immediate. Other performers, including Abbott's wife, encouraged them to remain a permanent team. They moved into radio in 1938 on The Kate Smith Hour.

Radio presented unique challenges for the duo. Initially, their similar voices made it hard for listeners to tell them apart. To solve this, Costello adopted a high-pitched, childish voice. They later hosted The Abbott and Costello Show, which featured musical interludes. The program included guests like Cary Grant and Lucille Ball. It also featured regular performers like Joe Kirk and Mel Blanc.

In Hollywood, the duo achieved massive commercial success. Their 1940 film debut was One Night in the Tropics. Their second film, Buck Privates, earned $4 million at the box office. This success launched them as major stars. They became famous for a subgenre known as horror comedy. They appeared in films like Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein and Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man.

Despite their fame, the performers faced significant personal hardships. Lou Costello suffered from a serious illness called rheumatic fever. In 1942, he also experienced the tragic death of his infant son, Lou Jr., in a swimming pool accident. These events changed Costello's demeanor and attitude. To support others, Abbott helped establish the Lou Costello Jr. Youth Foundation in 1947. This foundation still serves the Boyle Heights district of Los Angeles today.

Internal tensions also affected their professional relationship. In 1945, a rift developed after Abbott hired a servant who had been fired by Costello. For a time, they only spoke while performing. In 1946, they appeared in films as separate characters rather than a team. However, they eventually reunited for films like Buck Privates Come Home. They finally appeared in their last film together, Dance With Me, Henry, in 1956. Their legacy lives on through their classic routines and cultural impact.
