They became the most popular comedy team during the 1940s and 1950s. During the Second World War, they were the highest-paid entertainers in the world. People loved watching them on the radio, in movies, and on television. They brought laughter to millions of people through their special performances. Their work helped define comedy for a whole generation of fans.

Their comedy worked because of how they acted together. Abbott was the "straight man," which means he played the serious character.

Costello was the funny, dimwitted character who often got confused. They used a style called "patter," which is very fast talking. Their most famous routine was "Who's on First?" This joke used the names of baseball players to create confusion.

They spent many years refining these sketches to make them perfect.

Their journey began on the stage in New York City. They first worked together in 1935 at the Eltinge Burlesque Theater.

This happened because Costello's regular partner became ill that day. Abbott stepped in to help, and the two became a permanent team. They moved to radio in 1938 with a show called The Kate Smith Hour. Later, they had their own program, The Abbott and Costello Show. This show featured music and many different guest stars.

They were massive stars in Hollywood movies as well. Their film debut was in the 1940 movie One Night in the Tropics.

These movies featured monsters like Frankenstein and the Invisible Man. They even made a movie called Abbott and Costello Go to Mars in 1953.

Life was sometimes very difficult for the performers. Costello suffered from a serious illness called rheumatic fever. He also faced the tragic loss of his infant son, Lou Jr., in 1942.

These hard times changed his personality and his attitude. To help others, Abbott helped start the Lou Costello Jr. Youth Foundation in 1947. This foundation was made to support underprivileged children. It still serves the Boyle Heights district of Los Angeles today.
