He is best remembered as the "straight man" in the comedy duo Abbott and Costello. A straight man is a performer who stays serious while a partner tells jokes. This helps the funny parts work even better. Bud was very skilled at this hard job. He helped bring his partner, Lou Costello, back to the script. Their teamwork made them some of the most popular stars in the world. People loved watching them perform together on stage and screen.

Bud's life in entertainment started very early. He was born in Asbury Park, New Jersey, in 1897. His parents worked in the circus. His mother was a bareback rider and his father sold goods. Bud grew up around many different kinds of shows. He worked many jobs, including shoveling coal on a ship. Later, he worked in theater box offices. In 1923, he began producing his own small shows. He even started performing as a straight man when he could not afford to hire one.

His career changed forever when he met Lou Costello. They first worked together in 1935 at a theater in New York. By 1936, they became an official team. They performed in many different ways, such as burlesque and radio shows. In 1938, they became regulars on the Kate Smith Hour radio show. This helped them become famous across the whole country. Soon, they were making movies for Universal studios. Their first big hit was the film Buck Privates in 1941.

Between 1940 and 1956, the duo made 36 films together. They were huge stars at the box office. In 1942, they were the number one stars in the country. They also had their own radio programs on NBC and ABC. During the summer of 1942, they helped sell $85 million in War Bonds. They even brought their comedy to television in the 1950s. One of their most famous routines is called "Who's on First?" This famous bit is even shown at the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Even though they were successful, things were not always easy for the pair. They had disagreements about money and how to split their pay. They also had personal problems that caused a "permanent chill" between them. Bud Abbott helped start a foundation for children in 1947. It was named after Lou's son, Lou Costello Jr. Bud Abbott died of cancer in 1974 at age 76. He has three stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. These stars honor his work in movies, radio, and television.
