As a boy, he taught himself ventriloquism from a small manual. Later, a famous performer named Harry Lester gave him daily lessons. To make his puppets, Bergen used many different materials. He once paid a woodcarver $36 to sculpt Charlie's head. He built the body using a nine-inch broomstick for a spine. He also used rubber bands and cords to move the puppet's jaw. These simple tools helped him bring his characters to life.

His journey to fame started in many different ways.

He joined the cast of The Chase and Sanborn Hour in 1937. The show stayed on the air until 1956. Even though listeners could not see him, they felt Charlie was real. This was a very difficult thing to do on radio. In 1937, he even received a special wooden Oscar award. This honor was given to him for his work with Charlie McCarthy. His radio shows were so popular they even inspired people in the United Kingdom.

His talent reached many different types of media.

One of his final roles was in The Muppet Movie. This was special because Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets, saw Bergen as a great inspiration. Bergen's work helped change how people thought about puppetry and comedy forever.
