A hand puppet is a special kind of puppet.

It works much like a glove for your hand. A performer puts their hand inside the body and head. This helps them move the puppet around. Some puppets are very simple and have no moving parts. They might be made of hard plastic or soft fabric. A sock puppet is a very easy kind to make. You just slide a sock over your hand.

You can even use your thumb to move the mouth. This makes the puppet look like it is talking to you.

There are many ways to make a puppet move. Glove puppets are a bit more complex than simple ones. They have a division for fingers to move the arms. The performer must hide their own hand from the audience. This keeps the magic of the puppet alive. Some puppets use rods to move their arms. These rods can be made of wood or wire. Rod-hand puppets often show only the top half of a body. The stage hides the rest of the character.

You might see these puppets at a fair or carnival.

Some puppets are much larger than a single hand. These are called live-hand puppets. They also go by names like "two-man puppet." Because they are big, they need two people to work. One person puts their hand inside the head. They control the head and the mouth. The second person helps move the arms. This allows the puppet to make hand gestures. Most puppeteers are right-handed. This means the main person moves the left hand. The second person is called the "right-hander."

Many famous shows use these kinds of puppets. You may know characters from Sesame Street. They often use rod-hand puppets or live-hand puppets. You might also see puppets in shows like Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Specifically, the segments called Kukla, Fran, and Ollie use them. Some puppets are even sold as toys for children. These are often popular licensed characters. Puppetry is a skill that people have shared for a long time. It brings characters to life through careful movement.

Puppets are not just for shows or play. They are also very helpful in the classroom. Teachers use them to help students learn new things. Puppets can make math feel more real and concrete. They also help students with their reading skills. It can be hard to read new words alone. A puppet takes the pressure off the student. The student feels more brave when the puppet is talking. This makes learning a much more engaging process for everyone.
