You put your hand inside its body. It works much like a glove. Some puppets are very simple. They might be made of hard plastic. Others are made of soft fabric. A sock puppet is a simple kind. You just slide a sock onto your hand.

You can use your thumb to move the mouth. This makes the puppet look like it is talking.

Some puppets are more complex. A rod-hand puppet has movable arms. The performer uses wooden or wire rods to move them. You might see these at fairs or carnivals. Many puppets from Sesame Street use this way.

Large puppets are called live-hand puppets. These need two people to work. One person moves the head and mouth. The second person helps move the arms. This allows the puppet to make hand gestures.

Puppets are also useful in classrooms. They help students feel more brave. A puppet can help a child practice reading. It can also make math more fun to learn.
