They performed in many ways, including vaudeville, movies, radio, and television. Their partnership was special because they had a unique way of working together. George often played the "straight man," which is the serious person in a joke. Gracie played a silly woman who used very strange logic. This made for a funny team that audiences loved to watch.

Their comedy act worked through a specific way of performing. At first, they actually played the opposite roles. They changed after they noticed the audience laughed more at Gracie's silly lines. George wrote most of the material for their shows. In their radio years, they used "running gags" to keep people interested. One gag was a fake hunt for Gracie's lost brother. Another gag involved Gracie running for president with a silly party. These funny stories helped them become huge stars on the radio.

Their journey began many years ago in the early 1920s. They met in 1922 and first performed at a theatre in Newark, New Jersey. They traveled to small towns to perform in vaudeville shows. They eventually married in Cleveland on January 7, 1926. In 1927, they joined the Keith-Albee-Orpheum circuit to reach more people. They were not famous overnight, though. George said they often performed fourth in a long show with many other acts.

They appeared in many different types of media throughout their lives. They made short films like *Fit to Be Tied* in 1930.

They also starred in big musical comedies like *The Big Broadcast* in 1932. Their radio show, *The Adventures of Gracie*, started in September 1934. Later, they moved to television with a popular sitcom from 1950 to 1958.

Their hard work earned them many honors. They were inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 1994. They also joined the Television Hall of Fame in 1988.

Even after their duo years ended, George Burns stayed very busy. He had a huge career comeback when he was much older. In 1975, he starred in the film *The Sunshine Boys*. He won an Academy Award for this role. At age 80, he became the oldest person to win an Oscar at that time. He continued working until just weeks before he died in 1996. His long life showed how much people loved his comedy.
