This music played during their opening credits. It became just as famous as their derby hats.

The pair used very specific looks to help tell their stories. Stan Laurel played a clumsy and childlike character. He often pulled his hair up to look shocked. He even removed the heels from his shoes to walk flat-footed.

Oliver Hardy played a bossy but polite man. He had a small toothbrush mustache and spit curls. He often twiddled his necktie when he felt embarrassed. Both men wore derby hats in their films. Their clothes helped show how different they were. Stan wore a loose jacket and a bow tie. Oliver wore a small jacket with one straining button. These details made their characters easy to recognize.

Both men had busy lives before they became a team. Stan Laurel was born in England in 1890. He was part of a theatrical family. He worked on stages in Europe and America. He even served as an understudy for Charlie Chaplin.

Oliver Hardy was born in Georgia, USA, in 1892. He started as a theater projectionist. Later, he became a very busy actor. He appeared in over 250 silent short films. He even played many different roles like heroes and villains. They both brought much skill to their partnership.

The two men met by chance in a film called "The Lucky Dog" in 1921.

They did not work together again until 1925. They officially became a team in 1927. This happened during the film "Putting Pants on Philip." One story says they became a team because of a cooking accident. Oliver Hardy burned his arm on a leg of lamb. The studio decided to add Stan to the movie to help. When they saw them together, they knew they were a real team. They stayed with the Hal Roach studio until 1940.

Laurel and Hardy's work changed how people watched movies. They moved from silent films to talking pictures very easily. Their funny fights often followed a "tit for tat" pattern. This meant they would take turns breaking things. They would ruin an object and then find something else to vandalize.
