Family Guy is a long-running American animated sitcom.

It is created by Seth MacFarlane for the Fox Broadcasting Company. The series follows the lives of the Griffin family in the fictional city of Quahog, Rhode Island. The show is known for its dysfunctional family dynamics and its specific style of humor. A primary feature of the show is the use of cutaway gags. These are short, disconnected scenes that interrupt the main story to lampoon American culture. The series has become a significant part of television history through its unique comedic structure.

Producing an episode is a complex and lengthy process. It typically takes about ten months to complete a single episode. This long timeline exists because the show uses hand-drawn animation.

The writing process involves a team of writers who pitch various gags to MacFarlane and the rest of the staff. Only the ideas deemed the funniest are included in the final scripts. Many of the original writers came from live-action sitcoms rather than animation. This background influenced the show's writing style. In 2009, the cost to produce one episode was approximately $2 million.

The Griffin family consists of several distinct characters. Peter Griffin is the father, described as a bumbling and clumsy blue-collar worker. His wife, Lois, is a stay-at-home mother and a piano teacher. She comes from the affluent Pewterschmidt family. Their daughter, Meg, is a teenager who is often bullied or ignored by her family members. Their son, Chris, is an awkward and unathletic teenager. Stewie is the infant son, characterized as an evil genius with adult-like manners. Finally, Brian is an anthropomorphic pet dog who is witty, sarcastic, and speaks English.

Seth MacFarlane developed the concept for the show while studying animation at the Rhode Island School of Design. He originally created two animated films titled The Life of Larry and Larry & Steve. These shorts served as the foundation for the Griffin characters. MacFarlane redesigned the protagonist, Larry, into Peter Griffin. He also transformed the dog, Steve, into Brian. In May 1998, MacFarlane pitched a fifteen-minute pilot to Fox with a $50,000 budget. This pitch led to the series being greenlit for production.

The series has experienced several shifts in its broadcast history. Family Guy premiered on January 31, 1999, following Super Bowl XXXIII. The show was canceled in 2002 after its third season aired. However, high ratings from syndicated reruns and strong DVD sales convinced Fox to revive it. The fourth season began airing on May 1, 2005. In 2009, the show earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series. This was a notable achievement, as it was the first animated series nominated for that award since 1961.

Family Guy has expanded into various forms of media and spin-offs. One spin-off, The Cleveland Show, featured the character Cleveland Brown and aired from 2009 to 2013. A second spin-off titled Stewie is scheduled to premiere during the 2027–28 season. The franchise also includes books, video games, and a pinball machine. There is even a collection of episodes titled Laugh It Up, Fuzzball, which parodies the original Star Wars trilogy. These various projects demonstrate the wide reach of the show's brand.

The show has also faced significant criticism over the years. Some viewers and critics have challenged its storylines and character portrayals. These criticisms include allegations of racism, sexism, and homophobia. Others have pointed to the show's reliance on offensive stereotypes and graphic violence. Despite these controversies, the show remains a major presence in animation. On April 2, 2025, a "mega deal" with Disney was announced. This renewal will extend the series through the 2028–29 television season, marking nearly thirty years of the show's existence.
