His career spans many different forms of media, including live-action films and musical performances. He has become a major figure in modern American pop culture.

MacFarlane's interest in art began during his early childhood in Kent, Connecticut. At age two, he was already drawing cartoon characters like Fred Flintstone. By age five, he decided to pursue animation as a career. He practiced by making flip books, which are small books with drawings that appear to move when flipped quickly. At age nine, he published a weekly comic strip named Walter Crouton for a local newspaper. This early work even caused a small controversy when a priest sent an angry letter regarding a comic strip about Communion.

He attended the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) to study animation. While a student, he performed stand-up comedy and acted in student films. His senior thesis film was titled The Life of Larry. This short film served as a direct precursor to his later success. A professor submitted the film to the studio Hanna-Barbera, which led to MacFarlane's first professional job. He graduated from RISD with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1995.

At Hanna-Barbera, MacFarlane worked as an animator and a writer. He was notable because he was one of the few people hired specifically for his writing talent rather than just his drawing. He contributed to several famous Cartoon Network series, including Dexter's Laboratory, Cow and Chicken, and Johnny Bravo. He found that working on Johnny Bravo helped him develop a personal style through the show's specific scriptwriting process. During this time, he also created the animated short Larry & Steve. This short featured a character named Larry and his intellectual dog, Steve.

MacFarlane eventually moved to the Fox Broadcasting Company to create prime-time animation. He pitched Family Guy to executives after his time at Hanna-Barbera. Fox offered him a $50,000 budget to produce a pilot episode. This was much lower than the $1 million typically spent on animated pilots. MacFarlane spent six months working intensely in his kitchen to complete the project. The pilot was a simple, crudely animated film designed to show the show's tone. The executives loved it, and Family Guy debuted on January 31, 1999.
