He is most recognized for his long career hosting late-night talk shows. His style is often described as spontaneous and self-deprecating. This means he frequently makes jokes at his own expense to create humor. His programs often blend wacky, high-energy segments with elegant, narrative-driven short films. O'Brien's work has spanned nearly 30 years of late-night television history. He has successfully transitioned from writing behind the scenes to becoming a major cultural figure.

O'Brien's professional journey began in the writing rooms of major television productions. After graduating from Harvard University, he moved to Los Angeles to write for the HBO series Not Necessarily the News. In 1988, he joined the writing staff of the famous sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live. During his three years there, he helped create recurring sketches like "Mr. Short-Term memory." In 1989, he and his colleagues won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series. He eventually left the show in 1991 due to burnout, seeking a period of personal transition.

Following his time at Saturday Night Live, O'Brien joined the writing team for the animated sitcom The Simpsons.

He served as a writer and producer for the show from 1991 to 1993. This period was vital for his career, as he credited the show with helping him through a professional slump. O'Brien contributed to some of the series' most acclaimed episodes, such as "Marge vs. the Monorail" and "Homer Goes to College." His arrival coincided with a shift in the show's tone from realistic family comedy to a more surreal style. Colleagues noted his high energy, with one writer describing his presence as a "ten-hour Conan show, nonstop."

O'Brien's transition to hosting was a major turning point in television history. While working on The Simpsons, executive producer Lorne Michaels selected him to replace David Letterman as the host of Late Night.

To prepare, O'Brien performed a test audition on The Tonight Show stage. Although some media critics initially called his humor "awkward," NBC officially selected him on April 26, 1993. He hosted Late Night for 16 years, becoming the longest-serving host in that franchise's history. This role established him as a staple of the NBC network.

In 2009, O'Brien moved from New York to Los Angeles to host a new version of The Tonight Show. This period was marked by highly publicized network politics that resulted in a host change in 2010.

This tour was documented in the 2011 film Conan O'Brien Can't Stop. He then found a new home on the cable channel TBS, where he hosted the show Conan from 2010 to 2021.

O'Brien's career is marked by significant honors and diverse media formats. He has hosted major ceremonies, including the Emmy Awards in 2002 and 2006, and the Academy Awards in 2025 and 2026.

In 2010, Time magazine named him one of the 100 Most Influential People. He was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 2025 and received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor that same year. His versatility is evident in his work on the podcast Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend and his travel series, Conan Without Borders.
