Stewart is most famous for his long tenure as the host of The Daily Show on Comedy Central. He served as the program's host from 1999 to 2015 and returned for Monday episodes in 2024. Through his work, he has blended entertainment with news analysis to influence public conversation. His career spans television hosting, film acting, and best-selling authorship.

Stewart's path to fame involved a variety of roles in the entertainment industry. He began in stand-up comedy, performing at New York City venues like The Bitter End. To refine his comedic timing, he often performed at 2 a.m. at the Comedy Cellar. His television career progressed from writing for Caroline's Comedy Hour to hosting various MTV programs. These included You Wrote It, You Watch It and The Jon Stewart Show. Eventually, he joined The Daily Show in 1999, acting as both host and co-executive producer.

Before becoming a household name, Stewart held many diverse and practical jobs. After graduating from the College of William & Mary in 1984, he worked as a bartender and a shelf stocker. He also served as a puppeteer for children with disabilities and a contingency planner for the New Jersey Department of Human Services. During his college years, he was a dedicated athlete. He played three seasons of men's soccer for the William & Mary Tribe from 1981 to 1983. During those seasons, he recorded 10 goals and 12 assists for his team.

Stewart's personal history also shaped his perspective on the world. Born Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz in Manhattan, he grew up in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. His family is Ashkenazi Jewish, and he has spoken about experiencing antisemitism as a child. His upbringing during the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal influenced his skeptical view of official reports. This skepticism became a core element of his political commentary. He also legally changed his surname to Stewart in 2001, a move related to a complicated relationship with his father.

His professional achievements are marked by numerous prestigious accolades. Stewart has won 24 Primetime Emmy Awards for his work in television. He is also a two-time Grammy Award winner and a five-time Peabody Award winner.
