Kimmel's career began with a deep interest in radio broadcasting. He started working in radio while he was still in high school. He hosted a Sunday night interview show on the UNLV college station, KUNV. In 1989, he landed his first paid job in Seattle, Washington. He co-hosted The Me and Him Show at KZOK-FM. During this time, the hosts performed several on-air stunts. One specific stunt caused the loss of an $8,000 advertising contract with the Seattle Mariners. This led to Kimmel being fired from KZOK in 1990.

After working in various stations, Kimmel moved to Los Angeles. He spent five years at KROQ-FM as "Jimmy The Sports Guy." During this period, he met the comedian Adam Carolla. His transition to television began through writing and on-air promotions. He eventually accepted a role on the game show Win Ben Stein's Money. This show aired on Comedy Central starting in 1997. Kimmel's quick wit served as a contrast to Ben Stein's serious style. This performance earned the pair an Emmy award for Best Game Show Host.

Kimmel's success led to several different types of television production. In 1999, he co-hosted The Man Show with Adam Carolla. Under the name Jackhole Productions, he also helped create Crank Yankers. This show featured various characters, including "Elmer Higgins" and "The Nudge." He also produced The Andy Milonakis Show for MTV2. Kimmel even co-wrote the feature film Windy City Heat. This film won a prize at the 2004 Montreal Comedy Festival. These roles helped establish him as a versatile producer and performer.

Family connections play a significant role in his current work. Kimmel was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Joan and James John Kimmel. His mother's family migrated from Ischia, Italy, after the 1883 earthquake. He later obtained Italian citizenship in 2025. Many of his relatives appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. His cousin Sal Iacono is a writer and performer on the show. His brother, Jonathan, works as a director for the program. His Aunt Chippy, or Concetta Potenza, is also a featured part of the show.
