He is best known for his long career in late-night television. For many years, he served as the host of NBC's "The Tonight Show." Beyond television, he is a prolific stand-up comedian and an automotive enthusiast. His work spans many different formats, including movies, game shows, and even voice acting for animated characters.

Leno's professional journey began with stand-up comedy and small acting roles. In the 1970s, he appeared in various television series like "Good Times." He also had minor roles in films such as "Americathon" and "Polyester."

A significant turning point occurred in 1986 when he became a regular substitute host for Johnny Carson on "The Tonight Show." This role allowed him to build a connection with the audience. In 1992, he officially replaced Carson as the permanent host. This transition was highly publicized and even became the subject of a book and a movie.

His tenure as host was marked by both high ratings and complex industry conflicts. In 1995, his viewership ratings surpassed those of his rival, David Letterman, for the first time.

However, his career faced a major disruption in 2009. NBC decided to move Leno from "The Tonight Show" to a new 10:00 p.m. program called "The Jay Leno Show." This decision led to a high-profile conflict involving the new "Tonight Show" host, Conan O'Brien. The tension between the hosts and the network resulted in O'Brien leaving the network after a $33-million payout. Consequently, Leno returned to host "The Tonight Show" on March 1, 2010.

Leno's second period as host ended in early 2014. NBC announced that Jimmy Fallon would be his successor. Leno hosted his final episode on February 6, 2014, featuring many famous guests.

Following his departure, he was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame. He did not stop working, however. He maintained an active schedule, performing roughly 200 live stand-up comedy shows every year across North America. He also appeared in the comedy series "Last Man Standing" as a mechanic named Joe Leonard.

Aside from comedy, Leno has a deep passion for automobiles. He manages a massive personal car collection. This interest led to the creation of "Jay Leno's Garage," a series that aired on CNBC from 2015 to 2022.
